How to say no to your boss without damaging your career

You do not say no. You say "yes, if."

When your boss asks for something you privately believe is impossible, the reflexive yes feels safe and is the most dangerous move you can make. You are not agreeing to the work. You are agreeing to fail quietly, weeks from now, when it is too late to fix.

The skill is to name the trade in the room, out loud, immediately. "Yes, I can take this on, if we move the reporting deadline or add a person. Which one works." That is not defiance. That is you doing the resource math your boss cannot see, in real time, in front of her. It builds trust instead of spending it.

The managers who stall careers are not the ones who push back. They are the ones who absorb everything, smile, and miss.
